PENDRY HOTEL MANHATTAN WEST

BROOKFIELD

NEW YORK, 2021

Selected and curated artworks for Pendry Manhattan West permanent collection. The 23-story hotel designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Gachot Studios, opened in the Fall of 2021.

The Pendry Manhattan West is a peaceful haven at the center of a buzzing and exciting new neighborhood. Upon entering the hotel, one experiences the warm and serene environment which is echoed in the art selection on the fifth floor. New York based curator Lolita Cros chose artworks that invite the outside in, pulling from natural elements evoking the nearby Hudson River overlooking the New Jersey Palisades. Meghann Riepenhoff, a Californian-born photo-based artist, uses sunlight, water and chance to create dynamic photographs, which come to life when the cyanotype-coated paper comes into contact with the natural elements.

This poetic collaboration between the kinetic landscape and the human touch also appears in the painting on view on the same floor. Inspired by his past experience as a superintendent, New York based artist Evan Robarts replicates the calligraphic-like motions of a mop on linoleum tiles. Drawing a parallel between labour and art making, he also comments on the roles we play in the urban landscape, and the choreographies we perform within it. Like in Riepenhoff’s work, it is through chance and the forces of nature that the work comes together. The ease in the abstraction of both pieces allows for a peaceful and meditative moment in the heart of New York City.
